Caribbean Holiday Cruise: San Juan, St. Barts & Curacao

Old Town San Juan is still partially enclosed by the original fortress walls dating back to the early 1500s. Attractively restored buildings with filigree cast iron balconies line its narrow cobbled streets, and cafés in shaded squares provide an ideal spot to linger. This stunning harbor, filled with pleasure boats and encircled by emerald hills dotted with pastel houses, was once the center of a bustling pirate culture, as swashbuckling knaves such as Blackbeard and Drake traded stolen wares in the port of Charlotte Amalie. Today many of their old warehouses have been converted to shops and malls, where you may spend your pieces of eight on an array of treasures those buccaneers could never have imagined. Not a shopper? Hit the water without walking the plank when you pilot your own zodiac, or an underwater motor scooter.

Local lore has it that the unusual shape of this little bit of paradise reminded Christopher Columbus of a reclining, voluptuous woman, so he named it Virgin Gorda, the “Fat Virgin.” She is suitably adorned with dramatic heights that plunge down from Gorda Peak to the sparkling turquoise waters far below. This is a good place to explore in a jeep, swim with dolphins, or hike the rugged trails throughout the island. Virgin Gorda is most famous for The Baths, where giant granite boulders are strewn across the beach and in the water, creating pools, caves, and grottos – a sort of natural water park.

When you spy the distinctive white baroque towers of the St. Johns Cathedral, you’ll know you have arrived in Antigua’s capital city. With a staggering 365 beaches located across the island, you can visit a new beach every day of the year. But if you only have limited time to catch some rays, take a boat tour around Antigua for a unique vantage point to find the right strand of sand that speaks to you. If you’re still undecided, Galley Bay Beach is popular and is the perfect place to put your shades on and relax under an oversized umbrella. Once you’ve soaked up enough sun, head back into town and shop ‘til you drop. St. Johns is renowned for its duty-free shops, malls, and boutiques that feature everything from haute-couture to handicrafts.

St. Barts is a tropical paradise with a French flair. Red rooftops cluster on deep green hillsides, and front an irresistibly blue bay. Tranquil lagoons and dozens of creamy white sand beaches vie for your attention with chic boutiques and French restaurants, and the air is filled with mingling scents of frangipani and fresh baguettes. Explore the dramatic scenery in your own ATV, cruise the coast in a speedboat, or hike to a secluded cove for a swim.

Scarborough is a large, multicultural area that contains the Scarborough Bluffs, huge cliffs overlooking Lake Ontario, lined with parks, beaches, and hiking trails. Inland, the sprawling Toronto Zoo features global animal pavilions, close-up encounters, and a wildlife health centre. The area is also known for its diverse spread of restaurants, including regional Southeast Asian, Chinese, and Indian cuisine.

Paradise found. No crowds of tourists, no hotels, just a resident population of about 250 in one village on the island’s highest hill (with its most spectacular views). Spend the morning aboard a catamaran exploring the waters around the Tobago Cays, five petite, uninhabited islets floating in a marine park of coral, and turtle and bird sanctuaries. Snorkel the reef off Mopion Island, a speck of sand in a crystal sea, without so much as a palm tree – just one large thatch umbrella. No doubt such exertion will give you an appetite, so back at Mayreau enjoy a beach barbeque Azamara style, on the soft white sand.

Nicknamed “Little England” by some, Barbados is home to many museums that chronicle the island’s rich past and over 100 shipwrecks along its reefs that are a playground for divers from around the world.

As the capital and largest city of Aruba, Oranjestad (Dutch for “Orange Town”) is named after King Willem van Oranje-Nassau, the first heir to the Dutch House of Orange. Now mainly referred to as “Playa” by the locals, Oranjestad is renowned for its sunny weather year-round, with a virtually constant temperature of 28C/82F. Given the beautiful climate and myriad of pristine white beaches, no wonder some of the city’s most popular activities to do are soaking in the sun, snorkeling, sailing, fishing and boat rides. Shopping is also a common pursuit, with the vast amount of jewelry stores in Aruba offering much lower prices than elsewhere around the world. If you’re in search of locally made goods and products, visit Oranjestad’s marketplace for art and handicrafts, sample an Aruba-made Balashi Beer, and maybe even try an ostrich burger, which are widely available due to the city’s proximity to a number of ostrich farms.

Dating back to the 1600’s, the beautiful city of Willemstad is the capital of the island of Curacao and one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean. It was once the former capital of the Netherlands Antilles and its Dutch influences are felt everywhere—particularly in the historic heart of the Willemstad, where the Old Town’s colonial culture and unique architecture has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Curacao Maritime Museum for engaging displays that trace the island’s considerable history or Museum Kura Hulanda, considered one of the best museums in the Caribbean. Watch ships of all sizes come through Willemstad’s channel via the Queen Emma Bridge or discover the rich colors of Dutch architecture at Fort Amsterdam, which dates back to the 1760’s. Head to Punda, the oldest part of Willlemstad, for local and international restaurants, great shopping and local specialty products like Dutch Delft Blue figurines, wheels of Gouda and Edam cheeses, and of course the original Curacao liqueur.

Famous for its twin peaks shaped by the upheaval of a now extinct volcano, St. Lucia is one of the truly unspoiled islands in all the Caribbean. Here you’ll find a variety of landscapes and eco-systems not found anywhere else in the region, including rain forests, mountains and beaches that truly deserve the “pristine” designation.

Get to know Nevis, one central volcano and an area five miles by seven, its circle island road less than a two-hour drive. Within that tiny space are crammed delights for every taste: a championship golf course at the Four Seasons; the exhilaration and romance of dashing across a beach on horseback; and a trek through a lush rainforest of bamboo and tropical fruit trees, entertainment provided by monkeys swinging through the branches. For history hunters there are a number of old sugar plantations in varying stages of preservation and decay. They have intriguing tales to tell, and perhaps a few ghosts for good measure.
